For each new morning with its light,

For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Happy Thanksgiving!

If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, "thank you," that would suffice.

~ Meister Eckhart

This is one of my favorite quotes. I've used it several times here, but it so well expresses the heart of faith that appreciates and is thankful for Grace in life.
As we come to the Thanksgiving holiday, let's offer that one prayer that is enough... a "thank you" from the heart.

Thanksgiving comes to us each year.

Some pray, some feast, some rest.

I fold my hands and bow my head

and count the ways I am blessed.

~ Lucille Crumley

In the resting, feasting, and praying may you indeed know the many ways you are blessed!

When you help dig another out of their troubles, you may find a place to bury your own.

On mission trips I often come away with the feeling that I have received as much as I have given. In giving we receive. In sharing we are blest. So share today knowing that you bless others and yourself.

I was happier when I was doing a mechanic's job.

~ Henry Ford (American industrialist)

We often think that if we only had more we would be happy. But to be content with life as it is, that is the path to happiness. So today, let's cultivate gratitude for what we have and let go of our need for more.

Peace is not a virtue, but the fruit of virtue.

~ Thomas Aquinas

Many of the things we seek in life are the results of other more basic practices. Peace is the fruit of good relations with God and others. Happiness is the result of pursuing things that our worthy of our efforts. Contentment is the gift of living with a sense of deeper meaning.  So if you want peace or other virtues, live a lifestyle that makes those results possible.

All things are connected like the blood that unites us.

We did not weave the web of life,
We are merely a strand in it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.

~ Chief Seattle

We are a part of something larger than ourselves. Living our faith connects us to that larger reality. So today honor the web of connection and embody the love that makes it whole.

Decide on what you believe is right, and stick to it.

~ George Eliot

Listening to your own inner light is an essential part of the journey. Often others will give advice, both good and bad, but if we do not have a grounding in our own convictions and sense of self we are aimless in our journey. So today, trust in what you know and be carefully open to other's advice.

The life I touch for good or ill will touch another life,

and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops

or in what far place my touch will be felt.

~ Frederick Buechner

Each of us has far more ability to effect the lives of others, the life of the world, than what we imagine. For we are connected in an interdependent web. So today be mindful of how all you do is bigger than you.

The arm of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Many thought they would never live to see an African American president. Centuries of slavery, segregation, and prejudice seemed too high a mountain to overcome. Yet here we are. And we can see again that, while it may take time, life moves inexorably toward justice. So let's, each of us in our own way, work toward that place where God's justice is more fully realized.

The test of courage comes when we are in the minority.

The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority.

~ Ralph W. Sockman

Either way, after this extraordinary election, we are called to rise to our best selves and join together to make our world a better place.

Thinking is not to agree or disagree. That is voting.

~ Robert Frost

Moving beyond words alone we strive to put our thoughts and values into action. Just thinking about it is not enough. Let's allow our thoughts to motivate us to action. Don't forget to vote today.

Those who trust in God's grace and love others don't need to consult their bank accounts or stock portfolios to see how wealthy they really are.

With the losses many have sustained in the recent banking and market failures perhaps we can stand back and reflect on what really matters in life.
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also," (Luke 12:34) Jesus tells us.  Are the treasures you value worthy of your heart?
